Summer Camp 2007 Activities

Orientation, Placement Test and Neighbourhood Tour:
Students are to arrive at Cornerstone at 8:45. They will be introduced to our staff and given a detailed explanation of Cornerstone and its policies.  The students will then take a placement test.  The test has listening, reading, writing, grammar and speaking portions and takes about an hour and fifteen minutes.  The test will ensure that students are placed in the appropriate class for their level and age. Students are then taken on a walking tour of Cornerstone and the surrounding neighbourhoods.  The short tour includes the subway system, local food courts, underground paths, the trendy Yorkville shopping district, the Toronto Reference Library and the downtown center.

Tour of CityTV, MuchMusic and Bravo:
Students will get to see behind the scenes the settings and equipment used to broadcast the news, movies and entertainment on three of Canada’s most famous and most watched stations.

Royal Ontario Museum:
Canada’s largest and most prestigious museum, the ROM, has exhibits from around the world. The dinosaur exhibit is always the highlight of this interesting and educational activity.

Casa Loma:
Case Loma is a hundred year old house built like a castle in the middle of Toronto on a high hill.  The building is actually visible from the windows of Cornerstone many kilometers away.  Students will explore the house; learn of its history and its secret passageways.

Niagara Falls:
One of the highlights of the students’ trips will surely be Niagara Falls the largest waterfall in the world.  Students can see the falls from afar and can also get close if they don’t mind getting wet.

CN Tower:
Built 30 years ago the CN Tower is still the tallest free standing structure in the world. Students looking from the top will see the cars look like ants.  Will they be brave enough to walk on the glass floor?

Ontario Science Centre:
The science center is a favourite for school field trips.  It educates and entertains with its many interactive exhibits explaining the wonders of science and nature.

Eaton Centre:
Up to this point students may have been too busy to get a chance to experience Toronto’s many shopping opportunities.  The Eaton Centre is Toronto’s largest mall with both concourse and department stores.

Art Gallery of Ontario:
The AGO is the home of many famous works of art from recent modern art exhibits to the old masters.  Students who haven’t had a chance to test their artistic tastes will get a chance here.

Toronto Zoo:
The Toronto Zoo is home to polar bears, elephants, monkeys, lions, tigers and more.  This is a full day activity because there is just so much to see and do.

Taste of the Danforth:
One of Toronto’s largest ethnic areas is the Greek area on Danforth Street.  Every year tens of thousand of people come to experience the food and music as one of Toronto’s main roads is closed so that people can dance in the street.

Movie Day:
Students will choose in class which of 2006’s summer blockbusters they want to go and see in a local Toronto movie theatre.

Soccer at Christie Pitts Park:
All of the students will join together at Christie Pitts park one of Toronto’s largest and most central parks.  There they will play soccer, enjoying the grass, trees and squirrels of green Toronto.

Trip to French Canada – Quebec City, Montreal and Ottawa:
Students will travel by bus to three of Canada’s most famous and culturally significant cities. Montreal is a French speaking modern city with a European flair.  Quebec City is the capital of Canada’s French province Quebec, and show the traditional side of French Canada.  Ottawa is back in Ontario and is the capital of Canada.  Its importance is evident in the fantastic architecture of all the building.
