Cornerstone’s TESOL (Teaching English as a Second or Other Language) course is an intensive 2-month, 6-hour a day program, aimed at international students wishing to teach English in their home countries. The course will touch on the theory necessary to effective and informed teaching, but the main focus will be on the practical aspects involved. The majority of class time over the eight weeks will be spent on lesson planning, classroom management, and teaching the 4 language skills, as well as teaching grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. TESOL students will observe ESL classes being taught at Cornerstone, and will have the chance to practice teaching to each other and to Cornerstone’s ESL students. Students will complete a 5 page short thesis on a subject of their choosing.
Admission Requirements
- The minimum educational requirement is Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Non-native English speakers must provide proof of English proficiency (a TOEFL score of 80 on the iBT, or a score of 6 overall on the IELTs).
Assessment
Students will be assessed on their practice teaching component, completion of course assignments, presentations and tests. An 80% class attendance rate, completion of all assignments and successful completion of the practicum are necessary to pass the course.
Certification
Students who successfully complete the course will be awarded both a Cornerstone College of Business & Technology certificate and a certificate from American TESOL Institue (ATI), an affiliate of TESOL in the United Sates. You also receive a one year GME membership to tesol.org
