frank.jpg “To teach is to learn twice.” Even after twenty-five years of teaching, I am reminded of this every time I prepare for my classes, and especially when there are a lot of questions about grammar! What makes teaching English at Cornerstone so rewarding is the diversity of the student body. Tapping into the knowledge and interests of our learners can make for fascinating discussions, and students are often amazed at how much they can learn from one another, while still using English as the medium of expression. Using learners’ own lives as resource material engages them and offers a real reason for communication.
At the start of a course, I like to involve my class in group-forming activities. This is valuable, because we not only get to learn one another’s names, but we create a close-knit environment that encourages everyone to ask lots of questions without fearing embarrassment. Teachers love questions, so don’t be shy—just ask!
When students ask me how they can improve their language skills outside the classroom, I encourage them to do two things:
  1. Talk as much as possible with native speakers.
  2. Read, read, read, especially books that interest you.
By incorporating fun speaking activities and interesting reading material in my lessons, I hope to inspire students to enjoy speaking and reading English for its own sake, thus empowering them to take charge of their own learning.
